Praia

With approximately around 160.000 or even more inhabitants, Cape Verde´s capital Praia is by far the biggest city not only on the island of Santiago, but in the whole country. It might look like some Peruvian or Bolivian city in the Andes, but it is not – unfortunately. Then it wouldn´t be so bloody hot and muggy, even though the Atlantic Ocean is only a few metres away. But then again, this could be the reason, because Santiago is only a few hundred kilometres from Senegal and the Sahara Desert, the sun is relentless, and because of its inland mountains, there are clouds which bring humidity.

Mit heute etwa 160.000, vermutlich aber schon mehr Einwohnern ist die Hauptstadt der Kapverden, Praia, bei weitem die größte Stadt, nicht bloß auf Santiago, sondern im gesamten Land. Sie mag vielleicht so wirken wie eine peruanische oder bolivianische Andenstadt, aber das ist Praia nicht – fatalerweise. Denn dann wäre es dort nicht so unerträglich heiß und stickig, auch wenn der Atlantik gerade mal ein paar Meter entfernt ist. Aus anderem Blickwinkel könnte genau das der Grund sein, denn Santiago liegt bloß ein paar Hundert Kilometer vom Senegal und der Sahara entfernt, die Sonne sticht unbarmherzig, und an den Bergen im Inland bleiben die Wolken hängen, die es auch noch schwül machen.

The old town is on the Plateau, where you find beautiful colonial buildings, cafés, artists, and ice-cream. The latter is particularly important to Cape Verdeans, and you get it anywhere where there is electricity – like smartphones. The traffic, especially in the morning and evening hours, is a tender tribute to the F1 Monte Carlo race, but only with faster cars and families and dogs on the street. Luckily, there is at least one competent towing service in town, which passed our hotel several times during the days we´ve spent there.

Die Altstadt liegt auf dem Plateau, wo es wunderschöne Kolonialarchitektur, Cafés, Künstler und Eiscreme gibt. Letzteres scheint den Kapverden besonders wichtig zu sein, denn man bekommt es eigentlich überall, wo es auch Elektrizität gibt – so wie Smartphones. Der Verkehr ist – besonders in den Morgen- und Abendstunden – eine liebevolle Hommage an das Formel 1-Rennen von Monte Carlo, nur mit schnelleren Autos und Familien und Hunden auf der Straße. Glücklicherweise gibt es in Praia mindestens einen kompetenten Abschleppdienst, der in den Tagen, die wir dort waren, unser Hotel zahlreiche Male passierte.

When poverty and lack of prospects are getting the people, they first come to Praia for some kind of job, but often enough, they are only passing through, moving east to Boa Vista or Sal for work in the ever-growing tourism industry. Still, there are a lot of people deciding to leave the country for good, most of the time to the USA, then they start to send money that pays the beautifully renovated houses even on a small and remote island like Brava. Today, more Cape Verdeans are living abroad than on the islands, and once a year they come to visit.

Wenn Armut und Perspektivlosigkeit zu viel werden, kommen die Menschen zuerst nach Praia, um irgendeinen Job zu finden, aber häufig bleibt die Hauptstadt bloß Durchgangsstation Richtung Osten nach Boa Vista oder Sal, um in der rasch wachsenden Tourismusbranche zu arbeiten. Nach wie vor entscheiden viele Menschen, das Land langfristig zu verlassen, oft in die USA, und dann beginnen sie, Geld zu schicken, mit denen schließlich die aufwändigen Restaurationen der Häuser selbst auf einer kleinen und abgelegenen Insel wie Brava finanziert werden. Heutzutage leben mehr Kapverden im Ausland als auf den Inseln, und einmal im Jahr kommen sie, um die in der Heimat Gebliebenen zu besuchen.
