Cruising mighty Oogué – Bootsfahrt auf dem Oogué

The largest, longest and most important river of Gabon is the Oogué. The Oogué river flows between its source in the Republic of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) and the estuary north and south of Port Gentil 1.200 km away, fed by many tributaries of which the Ngounié river is the most important. The Ngounié river runs parallel to the coastline from south to north and flows into the Oogué north of Lambaréné. More than a hundred years ago, the river was used to transport slaves via Lambaréné to the coast from where they got shipped to places all over the world.

Der Oogué ist der größte, längste und wichtigste Fluss Gabuns. Von seiner Quelle in der Republik Kongo (Kongo-Brazzaville) legt er 1.200 km bis zum Mündungsdelta nördlich und südlich von Port Gentil zurück, gespeist von zahlreichen Zuflüssen, von denen der Ngounié der größte ist. Der Ngounié verläuft parallel zur Küste von Süden nach Norden und mündet nördlich von Lambaréné in den Oogué. Auf ihm wurden früher Sklaven aus dem Urwald über Lambaréné an die Küste gebracht, von wo aus sie weiter in alle Welt verschifft wurden.

There are motorized pirogues commuting daily between Lambaréné and Port Gentil, which takes more than four hours downstream and more than five hours upstream. The Oogué is meandering through dense rainforest where there are only few clearings with tiny settlements along the riverbank. The river is important in terms of freight traffic, to transport timber and other natural resources to Port Gentil. Today, the city is one of the largest in the country with close to 200.000 inhabitants, and it is the most important business location – especially because of the Gabon´s only oil refinery.

Zwischen Lambaréné und Port Gentil pendeln täglich motorisierte Pirogen, die für die etwa 200 km flussabwärts gut vier Stunden, flussaufwärts gut fünf Stunden benötigen. Der Oogué mäandert durch dichten Regenwald, in dem nur vereinzelt am Ufer Lichtungen für kleine Siedlungen gerodet wurden. Der Fluss ist auf diesem Abschnitt eine wichtige Güterverkehrsader, über die Bodenschätze und Tropenholz zum Hafen in Port Gentil transportiert werden. Die Stadt ist mit heute etwa 200.000 Einwohnern eine der größten des Landes und der wichtigste Wirtschaftsstandort – vor allem aufgrund der einzigen Öl-Raffinerie Gabuns.

In theory, it is possible to reach Loango National Park coming from the north from Port Gentil. When we tried this, the dirt road between Port Gentil and Ombué in the south had been blocked by the Chinese who are extending the road. We had to quit at kilometre twelve and return to Port Gentil from where we could have taken a boat to Ombué that day, but nobody could tell us, how, when and if we would get a transport back. Apart from a connection to Libreville, there were no other boats – especially not to the south. So, we returned to Lambaréné the next day where we took a shared taxi to Mouila. Now we had to stick to the overland route down south.

Von Port Gentil ist es theoretisch möglich, von Norden kommend den Loango Nationalpark zu besuchen. Als wir dies versuchten, war allerdings die Piste zwischen Port Gentil und dem etwa 140 km südlich gelegenen Ombué gerade von den Chinesen gesperrt worden, die dort die Straße ausbauen. Wir mussten beim Kilometerpunkt 12 wieder umkehren und zurückfahren. Zwar hätten wir an diesem Tag per Boot doch noch nach Ombué fahren können, aber wie, wann und ob wir dann wieder nach Port Gentil zurückkämen, konnte uns niemand sagen. Da es über eine Verbindung nach Libreville im Norden keinen weiteren Bootsverkehr gab – schon gar nicht Richtung Süden, kehrten wir am nächsten Tag per Boot nach Lambaréné zurück, von wo aus wir ein Sammeltaxi nach Mouila nahmen. Mussten wir uns also auf dem Landweg in den Süden durchschlagen.
