The stars above Lac Itasy – Die Sterne über dem Itasy-See

If you are heading west from Madagascar’s capital Antananarivo, the landscape becomes even more barren than it is around Tana. The Route National 1 is going up as far as 1.700m in altitude, and about 130km west of Tana, you are reaching the rough but beautiful volcanic area around Lake Itasy at approximately 1.300m. The ancient volcanos reach up to 1.800m, surrounding the idyllic, 9km-wide lake. The small and pleasant town of Ampefy is the centre of activities at the lakeshore, and the area is a perfect place for hiking, boat-trips and paragliding.

Fährt man von Madagaskars Hauptstadt Antananarivo Richtung Westen, wird die Landschaft noch karger als sie es um Tana schon ist. Die Route National 1 führt stetig bergan bis auf 1.700m Höhe, und etwa 130km westlich von Tana erreicht man schließlich die raue, aber schöne Gegend um den Itasy-See auf etwa 1.300m Höhe. Die uralten Vulkane erreichen Höhen von bis zu 1.800m und thronen majestätisch über dem neun Kilometer breiten See. Die kleine und angenehme Stadt Ampefy ist quasi das „Tor zum See“, und die Region eignet sich hervorragend für Wanderungen, Bootsfahrten und sogar Paragliding.

Supposedly the best accommodation around there is La Chaumière de Itasy on a hill near a village a few kilometres south of Ampefy. It is set up right above the rice paddies at the lakeshore with excellent views of the lake. And that is a good thing, because the main attraction – especially between July and September – is the star-studded sky at night. A crystal-clear sky and dry air, combined with the altitude and the fact, that Tana is the next real city and it´s light is blocked by the high mountains, makes it just perfect for astronomy and photography.

Vermutlich die beste Unterkunft in der Gegend ist das La Chaumière de Itasy auf einem Hügel nahe einem Dorf ein paar Kilometer südlich von Ampefy. Es liegt direkt über den Reisfeldern, die sich entlang des Seeufers erstrecken, und bietet herrliche Ausblicke auf die Landschaft. Und das ist auch gut so, denn die Hauptattraktion – besonders zwischen Juli und September – ist der überwältigende nächtliche Sternenhimmel. Ein kristallklarer Himmel und trockene Luft in Kombination mit der Höhe und der Tatsache, dass Tana die nächstgelegene Stadt ist und ihr Licht von hohen Bergen abgeschirmt wird, sorgen für perfekte Bedingungen für Astronomie und Fotografie.
