It feels just like being at the ocean standing at the shore of Lake Malawi. Besides Malawi, parts of the lake belong to Tanzania and Mozambique, but by far the largest piece belongs to the tiny southeast African country. Motorboats are rare on the lake, but innumerable dugout canoes as well as Dhows, traditional fishing boats with a mast and a sail. The Dhows can go out on the lake even when it is already too dangerous for the dugout canoes. But there are limits.
Am Malawisee hat man ständig das Gefühl, am Meer zu sein. Neben Malawi haben auch Tansania und Mosambik Anteile an dem See, doch der größte Teil gehört dem winzigen südostafrikanischen Land. Motorboote gibt es kaum entlang seines Ufers, dafür unzählige Einbäume und Dhows, traditionelle Fischerboote mit einem kleinen, aufstellbaren Mast und Segel. Diese Dhows können auch dann noch auf den See hinaus, wenn es für Einbäume schon zu gefährlich ist, doch irgendwann sind auch ihre Grenzen erreicht.
Malawian fishermen go far on the lake even at heavy swell. They fish with nets that are marked with empty bottles or cans. The work in the dugout canoes looks pretty risky, especially when standing up in the equally rough as narrow boat. Of course, the sail boats can go further, and they cooperate while fishing by running the lines with the nets from one boat to another. This is quite effective if there is a swarm of fish.
Weit wagen sich die malawischen Fisher auch bei höherem Wellengang hinaus auf den See. Sie fischen mit Netzen, die sie mit leeren Flaschen oder Kanistern markieren. Besonders abenteuerlich wirkt die Arbeit im Einbaum, wenn sie sich in dem sensiblen, schmalen Boot dazu auch noch hinstellen. Die Dhows, die kleinen Segler, können naturgemäß weiter hinausfahren. Mit diesen Booten wird auch im Verbund gefischt, indem die Netze zwischen den Booten geführt werden. Das ist besonders effektiv, wenn sich gerade ein größerer Schwarm vor der Küste aufhält.
Nkhotakota Pottery is situated a few kilometres south of the eponymous small town, and it is a branch of Dedza Pottery southeast of Lilongwe close to the border to Mozambique. Like in Dedza, they mix production with the sale of the pottery and a lodge as well as workshops for visitors and tourists. The owner is British, but all the employees are locals. Those ventures are a good chance of making life of whole communities better, because tourists mean better business and more jobs.
Wenige Kilometer südlich der Kleinstadt Nkhotakota liegt direkt am See die Nkhotakota Pottery, ein Ableger der Töpferei in Dedza, die ihr Zuhause südöstlich von Lilongwe an der mosambikanischen Grenze hat. Wie in Dedza verbindet man auch in Nkhotakota die reine Produktion und den Verkauf von Keramikwaren mit einer Lodge und Workshops für Besucher und Touristen. Der Inhaber ist ein Engländer, aber vor Ort arbeiten ausschließlich Einheimische. Solche Unternehmungen sind ein echte Chance, das Leben ganzer Gemeinden zu unterstützen und langfristig zu verbessern. Denn Touristen bedeuten in vielen Bereichen bessere Geschäfte und mehr Arbeit.
Life is at the beach. Besides cyclists, we witnessed women washing clothes, families having a picnic at the beach, herders leading their cattle to the water, fishermen mending their nets, drying fish, fixing the boats, and last but not least the many children that call this beach their home. It is equally a playground and a home for Malawian orphans. The vast number of them tells the story of the devastating consequences of HIV and other diseases for the society. In Nkhotakota, kids from a nearby orphanage are playing at the beach.
Entlang des Ufers spielt sich alles am Strand ab. Neben Fahrradfahrern erlebten wir Frauen, die die Kleidung der gesamten Familie auf den Steinen wusch, Familien, die am Strand picknickten, Hirten, die ihre Rinder täglich zum Tränken führten, Fischer, die Netze flickten, Fisch trockneten oder ihre Boote reparierten, und nicht zuletzt die vielen Kinder, für die der Strand Heimat bedeutet. Der Strand ist Spielplatz und Heimat gleichermaßen für malawische Waisenkinder. Welch verheerende Schneise HIV, Malaria und andere Krankheiten in die Gesellschaft schlagen, ist schon an der bloßen Menge, die es von ihnen gibt, ersichtlich. In Nkhotakota spielen Kinder aus einem nahen Waisenhaus am Strand.
