Virunga III – Meet the Batwa – Eine Begegnung mit den Batwa

Besides “Silver and Gold”, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers the unique opportunity to get a glimpse of the ancient and unparalleled rich culture of the Batwa, the people of the forest. When the park was gazetted, they had not only been translocated to the outskirts of Kisoro right at the edge of the woods that once had been their native home for conservation reasons, but they were also forced to integrate themselves into a society that marginalized their community and ostracized them because of plain prejudices. The same fate is shared by the San, or Khoisan, the bush people of southern Africa who are – just like the Batwa – the oldest ethnic groups on the planet – the first of mankind, if you want to put it that way, and they own an unlimited amount of knowledge referring to the woods. Meeting those hunter-gatherers does not only bring the Batwa community some income, but it is also the only occasion on which they are allowed to enter their home, the forest, and stay in touch with their primal identity. Most of the time, they work as day labourers, and that made them economically the most vulnerable social group during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Neben „Silver and Gold“ gibt es im Mgahinga Gorilla Nationalpark die Gelegenheit, von Mitgliedern der Batwa, der „Menschen des Waldes“, einen Einblick in ihre aussterbende Kultur zu bekommen, da sie bei Einrichtung des Parks nicht bloß aus ihrem Lebensraum, dem Wald, vertrieben worden waren, um dem Arten- und Naturschutz Platz zu machen, sondern in den Gesellschaften, in die sie sich integrieren sollen, auch noch marginalisiert und an den Rand gedrängt werden. In diesem Schicksal sind sie mit den San, oder Khoisan, den Buschleuten im südlichen Afrika, vereint, wenngleich sie genetisch die ältesten Ethnien des Planeten sind und einen schier unerschöpflichen Wissensschatz bezüglich der Wälder ihr eigen nennen. Ein solches Aufeinandertreffen mit ihrer uralten Jäger-und-Sammler-Kultur bringt der Batwa-Gemeinschaft nicht bloß ein wenig Geld, es ist auch die einzige Gelegenheit, zu der sie den Wald, der einst ihre Heimat gewesen war, heute noch betreten dürfen und den Kontakt zu ihrer ursprünglichen Identität halten können. Da sie häufig als Tagelöhner arbeiten, haben sie die Pandemie-bedingten Lockdowns naturgemäß besonders hart getroffen.
