Espargos

Espargos is a small, lovely desert town in the centre of Sal, right at the International Airport. It is the official capital of the island but of no further interest for tourists – if it wasn´t for the impressive volcanic desert landscape surrounding it. To fully enjoy this stunning scenery, one must walk up 107 metres high Monte Curral in the centre of town, from where you get the best views over the barren island of Sal with its few volcanic cones rising out of the desert wasteland. The many colourful houses in Espargos make a good contrast to the beige desert, and you can see the port of Palmeira only 4 km east of Espargos.

Espargos ist eine hübsche kleine Wüstenstadt im Zentrum von Sal, direkt am Internationalen Flughafen. Es ist zwar die offizielle Hauptstadt der Insel, aber für Touristen nicht weiter von Interesse – wäre da nicht die beeindruckende vulkanische Wüstenlandschaft drumherum. Um die richtig genießen zu können, muss man den 107 m hohen Hausberg Monte Curral im Zentrum der Stadt erklimmen, von wo aus man die beste Aussicht über die karge Insel Sal mit ihren vereinzelten Vulkankegeln, die aus der Wüstenlandschaft ragen, hat. Die zahlreichen bunten Häuser in Espargos ergeben schließlich den perfekten Kontrast zur beigefarbenen Wüste, und man kann den nur vier Kilometer entfernt gelegenen Hafen in Palmeira sehen.
