If Fajã de Água wouldn´t already exist, I´m pretty sure some writer or film director would make it up. It resembles too much a dream or a fantasy, and it is too close to at least a million clichés we´ve been fed with through movies, advertisement and pulp literature, because it´s the place at the end of the world with towering cliffs in the back and the endless Atlantic Ocean ahead, completely isolated and as remote as it can get. 20+ buildings housing around 120 people at the westernmost point of the Ilhas de Sotavento, the southerly islands of the Cape Verde archipelago.
But Fajã de Água is not only the name of the tiny settlement on the wild shore of the Atlantic, the Ribeira, the valley coming from the highland above bears the same name. It is the most fertile on the island of Brava – and the most beautiful. It is best to start walking along the road from Nova Sintra up to Nossa Senhora do Monte, passing an impressive Dragon tree at the roadside in Cova Rodela before you get the first view of the Atlantic, deep down below breathtaking ridges. After the church in Nossa Senhora do Monte, there is a path descending steeply into the valley, guiding past abandoned houses and along dizzying cliffs, and you can always see the white houses of Fajã de Água sparkling in the sunlight at the sea.
When reaching this gem gleaming with turquoise waters, you get to know all the residents of that stunning place, because they´re all out there, fighting with the waves in a tiny fishing boat, or – more likely – in front of one of the two or three tiny shops at the cobbled road that connects Nova Sintra with Fajã de Água. This road leads through the village and around the bay to some impressive rock formations sticking out of the water and forming a natural pool at the beginning of the small peninsula hosting the leftovers of Bravas former airport. Unfortunately, the peninsula isn´t big enough for a decent runway, and there is strong wind shear. Once, an airplane nearly landed in the water, so the airport had to be closed in 2004. Now, it is another one of the many lost places on the Cape Verde islands.
