Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, Entebbe

The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) is the zoo of Entebbe, Uganda´s former capital about 40 kilometres from Kampala on a peninsula at Lake Victoria. Entebbe is the home of Uganda´s international airport, where Israeli military started “Operation Entebbe” in 1976 to end the hijacking of an Air France airplane by Palestinians and German RAF morons – who had been supported by Idi Amin.

Das Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) ist quasi der Zoo von Entebbe, der ehemaligen Hauptstadt Ugandas, die knapp 40 Kilometer von Kampala entfernt auf einer Halbinsel im Victoriasee liegt und Heimat von Ugandas internationalem Flughafen ist. Dieser ist 1976 Schauplatz der von der israelischen Armee durchgeführten „Operation Entebbe“ gewesen, bei der die Entführung einer Air France-Maschine durch Palästinenser und deutsche RAF-Idioten – die von Idi Amin unterstützt worden waren – beendet wurde.

2012, we had visited UWEC at the end of our trip right before our flight home. 2017, we had no intention of doing something else. On 30 ha, UWEC offers various insights in most of Uganda´s habitats and is home to elephants, zebras, giraffes, crocodiles, various species of bird – among them the famous shoebill – and even rhinos. Most of the animals have been confiscated by the Uganda customs. For most Ugandans who are not wealthy enough to afford the horrendous National Park fees, UWEC is the only possibility to catch a glimpse of the unique flora and fauna of their own country. Nowadays, a whole lot of people make use of that possibility.

2012 hatten wir das UWEC am Ende unserer Reise vor dem Rückflug besucht, und das haben wir auch 2017 wieder so gehalten. Das UWEC bietet auf 30 Hektar Einblick in die meisten ugandischen Lebensräume und ist von Elefanten über Zebras, Giraffen, Krokodile, zahllose Vogelarten – darunter der Schuhschnabelstorch – und sogar Nashörner sehr gut ausgestattet. Bei vielen der Tiere handelt es sich um vom Zoll konfiszierte Exemplare. Das UWEC ist für die meisten Ugander, die sich niemals die selbst für die Einheimischen horrenden Nationalparkgebühren leisten könnten, die einzige Gelegenheit, die außergewöhnliche Tier- und Pflanzenwelt ihrer Heimat kennenzulernen. Und diese Möglichkeit wird inzwischen, besonders in Form von Schulausflügen, intensiv genutzt.

Our first visit in 2012 had been a calm one, because there had only few visitors. Back then, we had been quite impressed by the widespread compounds which nevertheless offered splendid observation experiences. It´s still like that, but UWEC today is the most visited zoo on the continent with up to 200.000 visitors per year. And our second visit was on the same day students come there. Accordingly, there were hundreds or even thousands of students along with the accompanying teachers all over the place. Right at the entrance, they have even built a swimming pool, and that makes it only worse. Of course, it´s a wonderful thing for the kids, but we couldn´t help but thinking of it as a kind of “Disneyland with animals”. It was horribly loud, like in a football stadium, and at least the flight animals must have been totally stressed. All in all, UWEC is still a great place, and the kids obviously loved it!

Bei unserem Besuch 2012 hatten wir das UWEC noch beinahe für uns allein gehabt. Damals hatten uns die großzügigen Anlagen, die dennoch sehr gute Beobachtungsmöglichkeiten boten, tief beeindruckt. Das ist heute immer noch so, aber mittlerweile ist das UWEC mit bis zu 200.000 Besuchern im Jahr der meistbesuchte Zoo auf dem Kontinent, und unser zweiter Besuch fand zufällig am Schulausflugstag statt. Dementsprechend ergossen sich Hunderte, wenn nicht gar Tausende Schüler und die dazugehörigen Lehrer über das UWEC, das inzwischen im Eingangsbereich sogar über ein eigenes Schwimmbad verfügt, was die Sache nicht besser macht. Natürlich ist das für die Kinder eine tolle Sache, aber des Eindrucks eines „Disneylands mit Tieren“ konnten wir uns einfach nicht erwehren. Die Lautstärke war der eines Bundesligaspiels ebenbürtig und dürfte vor allem den vielen Fluchttieren im UWEC nicht besonders gefallen haben. Am Ende aber bleibt, dass im UWEC viel richtig gemacht wird. Den Kindern war das auf jeden Fall anzusehen und zu hören.
