Lake Bunyonyi – Der Bunyonyi-See

Lake Bunyonyi is located only 7 kilometres from Kabale at 1.900 m altitude, while the surrounding mountains reach heights of 2.500 m. The lake was formed around 8.000 years ago when lava blocked Ndego river, and that led to the flooding of the valley. Today, Lake Bunyonyi is 25 km long, 5 km at its widest extension as well as 50 m deep, and it covers around 60 km². There are no crocodiles or hippos in the lake, and it is said to be bilharzia-free because of good mineral content.

Der Bunyonyi-See liegt nur etwa sieben Kilometer von Kabale entfernt auf über 1.900 m Höhe, während die ihn umgebenden Hänge bis zu 2.500 m hinaufragen. Der See ist vor etwa 8.000 Jahren entstanden, als Lava das Flussbett des Ndego blockierte, was zur Überflutung des Tals führte. Heute ist der Bunyonyi-See etwa 25 km lang, an seiner breitesten Stelle 5 km und bedeckt eine Fläche von 60 km² bei einer maximalen Tiefe von etwa 50 m. Im See gibt es weder Krokodile noch Flusspferde, und aufgrund seines hohen Mineralgehalts gilt er als Bilharziose-frei.

Today, Lake Bunyonyi is a tourist magnet with plenty of accommodation from budget to upmarket. Because of its setting, it is easy to combine a few days of relaxation at the lake with a gorilla tracking in nearby Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or a hike at the Virunga volcanoes. Accommodation is either along the shore or on one of the 29 islands on the lake which can be reached by motorboat or dugout canoe.

Heute ist der Bunyonyi-See eine echter Touristen-Magnet mit zahlreichen Unterkünften in allen Preis- und Luxusklassen. Denn durch seine Lage können ein paar Tage Entspannung am Wasser ganz unkompliziert mit einem Gorillatracking im Bwindi Impenetrable Nationalpark oder einer Wanderung an den Virunga-Vulkanen verbunden werden. Die Unterkünfte liegen dabei entweder entlang des Ufers oder auf einer der insgesamt 29 Inseln auf dem See, die – ganz nach Geschmack – im Motorboot oder im Einbaum erreicht werden können.
