When we visited Kabale, the gate to the Virunga volcanoes as well as to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, in 2012, we were lucky to get invited to Nyabushabi Primary School just outside the town on behalf of a Swiss student of teaching. It was a Friday, and the younger pupils were having a football tournament together with teams from other schools. We had the opportunity to meet the headmistress Joyce and have a chat about the educational system. It was fascinating to see that she knew all about the problems – from a lack of financial resources and the scarcity of African educational material to the immense flaws in the training of teachers, but she refused to despair of the situation and instead worked even harder for her students, with stoical passion and unshakeable idealism.
Als wir 2012 Kabale, das Tor zu den Virunga-Vulkanen sowie dem Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, besuchten, hatten wir das Glück, über einen schweizerischen Lehramtsstudenten in die Nyabushabi Grundschule etwas außerhalb Kabales eingeladen zu werden. Es war ein Freitag, und die jüngeren Schüler trugen gerade ein Fußballturnier gegen Mannschaften anderer Schulen aus. Wir bekamen die Möglichkeit, einer Unterrichtsstunde beizuwohnen sowie uns ausführlich mit der Direktorin Joyce über das Bildungssystem zu unterhalten. Dabei war es faszinierend zu erleben, dass ihr die zahlreichen Probleme allesamt bewusst waren – von den fehlenden finanziellen Mitteln über den Mangel an einheimischem Unterrichtsmaterial bis hin zu den enormen Lücken in der Lehrerausbildung, sie aber mit stoischer Leidenschaft und unverrückbarem Idealismus weiter für ihre Schüler arbeitete und sich von den desaströsen Umständen nicht beirren ließ.
