Pakwach

We reached Pakwach in the emptiest minibus in history. At the end of the ride, we had been the only two passengers on the complete rear bench seat, and I wondered if this could be an indication of the upcoming apocalypse. But the world decided to exist a little longer, and we got the opportunity to become acquainted with Uganda’s only town along river Nile as well as with some of the 23.000 people living there.

Nach Pakwach sind wir mit dem leersten aller Minibusse gekommen. Am Ende der Fahrt hatten wir die komplette letzte Reihe für uns, und ich fragte mich, ob dies das Ende der Welt markierte. Die beschloss aber, noch ein Weilchen weiter zu existieren, so dass wir Ugandas einzige Stadt am Nil und seine etwa 23.000 Einwohner kennenlernen konnten.

Most of them belong to the Alur tribe settling between river Nile and the district capital Nebbi. Alur are the “people of the water”, and they are living with and they are subsisting on the river. They do a lot of fishing and because of Murchison Falls National Park on the other, eastern side of the Nile, tourism is of increasing significance. Pakwach and the only bridge over the river between Lake Albert and South Sudan are the gateway to West Nile province, and tourism is on the rise because of years of peace and stability.

Die meisten von ihnen sind Alur, ein Stamm, der zwischen Nil und der weiter westlich gelegenen Distrikthauptstadt Nebbi siedelt. Die Alur sind „die Menschen des Wassers“, sie leben mit und vom großen Fluss, in dem sie ausgiebig fischen. Da direkt gegenüber, am Ostufer des Nils, der Murchison Falls Nationalpark beginnt und auch die Westnilprovinz, deren Tor Pakwach und die einzige Brücke über den Nil zwischen dem Albertsee und dem Südsudan darstellen, seit vielen Jahren schon stabil und sicher ist, spielt selbstverständlich der Tourismus eine immer größere Rolle.

Along the main road coming from Kampala and continuing as far as Arua in the northwest of West Nile via Nebbi, Pakwach is a rather bland town – but only there. Away from that main street and especially down to the shore, it is a completely different picture with an overall traditional structure and circular and rectangular adobe huts with thatched roofs.

Eine leidlich moderne und gesichtslose Stadt ist Pakwach nur entlang der Hauptstraße, die von Kampala kommend weiter über Nebbi bis nach Arua im Nordwesten der Westnilprovinz führt. Doch rechts und links davon und besonders hinab zum Nilufer sieht das völlig anders aus. Dort ist Pakwach eine äußerst traditionell angelegte Stadt mit fast ausschließlich Gebäuden im traditionellen Stil, sprich: runden oder rechteckigen Lehmhütten mit schilfgedeckten Dächern.

Alur people are extremely welcoming but also very poor, and because of Pakwach being part of West Nile province, literally everyone is in opposition to the government and Yoweri Museveni. Ontario, a musician from Pakwach working as a gardener/horticulturist along with his brother and his best friend, who have designed a lot of gardens of accommodation and institutions in Pakwach, put it that way: „Only a riot or a war could create change!“ He is a very peaceful person, and that statement was his way to express his despair.

Die Alur sind extrem freundliche, aber ebenso arme Menschen, denn Pakwach gehört zur Westnilprovinz und befindet sich damit faktisch in Opposition zur Regierung und Yoweri Museveni. Ontario, ein Musiker aus Pakwach, der seinen Lebensunterhalt gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder und seinem besten Freund als Gärtner/Gartenbauer bestreitet und für die Gartengestaltung zahlreicher Unterkünfte und Einrichtungen in Pakwach verantwortlich zeichnet, brachte es auf den Punkt: „Only a riot or a war could create change!“ Er ist ein sehr friedliebender Mensch, und diese Aussage war seine Art, ihre Hoffnungslosigkeit auszudrücken.
