Virunga I – The mountain gorillas – Die Berggorillas

The Virunga volcanoes include eight volcanoes in total, situated at the border triangle of Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo. Extended areas around the volcanoes are protected in order to preserve half of the population of the famous mountain gorillas living in the montane forests. The most active of the volcanoes are Nyiragongo (3.462 m) and Nyamuragira (3.063 m) in the DR Congo, the highest one is Karisimbi (4.507 m) in Rwanda.

Bei den Virunga-Vulkanen handelt es sich um insgesamt acht Vulkane im Drei-Länder-Eck von Uganda, Ruanda und der DR Kongo. Die Vulkane sind in allen drei Ländern zum größten Teil unter Schutz gestellt, da an ihren Flanken gut die Hälfte der verbliebenen Berggorillas leben. Am aktivsten sind der Nyiragongo (3.462 m) und der Nyamuragira (3.063 m) in der DR Kongo, der höchste Berg der Gruppe ist der Karisimbi mit 4.507 Metern Höhe in Ruanda.

In Uganda, there are Mount Muhabura (4.127 m), Mount Gahinga (3.474 m) and Mount Sabinyo (3.634 m) with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park protecting 34km² of montane forest since 1991. There is one group of mountain gorillas, including three silverbacks, staying in the park for the last couple of years without crossing the border to Rwanda or the DR Congo. The population of mountain gorillas has grown during the decades of conservation and tourism, and today there are more than 1.000 specimens, around 600 of them on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes in Uganda, Rwanda and the DR Congo, and 400 in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park just a stone’s throw north of the Virungas. By visiting the park near Kisoro town, one is also supporting the conservation of the Golden monkey, an adorably cute creature endemic to the volcano region and its bamboo forests. The parks slogan “Where Gold Meets Silver” is a tribute to both the silverbacks as well as the Golden monkeys.

Zu Uganda gehören der Muhabura (4.127 m), der Gahinga (3.474 m) sowie der Sabinyo (3.634 m), an deren Hängen seit 1991 34 km² als Mgahinga Gorilla Nationalpark unter Schutz stehen. Dort hält sich seit einigen Jahren fest eine Gruppe Berggorillas mit gleich drei Silberrücken auf. Neben den Berggorillas, von denen es derzeit wieder mehr als 1000 Exemplare gibt – gut 600 an den Hängen der Virunga-Vulkane in Uganda, Ruanda und der DR Kongo sowie etwa 400 im Bwindi Impenetrable Nationalpark einen Steinwurf nördlich der Vulkane, trägt man mit einem Besuch des Nationalparks bei Kisoro auch zum Erhalt der Goldmeerkatze bei, einem hinreißend knuffigen Geschöpf, das nur dort noch vorkommt, in den Bambuswäldern an den Hängen der Virunga-Vulkane. Mit Blick auf Goldmeerkatze und Silberrücken lautet das Motto des Nationalparks folgerichtig: „Where Gold Meets Silver“.
