Serra Malagueta (Chili/Pepper Mountains) is a mountain range located in the north of Santiago, and together with the one around Pico da Antónia (1394 m), the highest peak on the island, it is an important rain catcher. Because of its mountainous interior, the biggest island of the archipelago with the most inhabitants receives more rain than the others. That makes it also the most productive when it comes to agriculture.
Ecologically, Serra Malagueta is the most important area of the island, being home for a vast number of plants, 28 of them endemic species, as well as lots of birds and African Green Monkeys which had been introduced from the mainland years ago. But the main attraction is the spectacular mountain landscape with its humongous drops and staggering cliffs. The higher parts are protected as Parque Natural de Serra Malagueta, where several stunning hikes have their starting point.
The heart of Serra Malagueta is Ribeira Principal, a jaw-dropping valley sometimes becoming a gorge that meanders from the inland to the coast in the most picturesque way possible. The higher ranges near the park headquarter are quite green with pine trees and lush vegetation, but the further you descend to the valley and towards the coast, the drier it gets. There are remainders of human life everywhere you look, terraced fields and gardens, narrow paths along dizzying ridges and most of all, beautiful houses built with natural stones in the most unlikely places. But most of them have been abandoned, now crumbling along with the mountains, sometimes serving as a shelter for the food for the cows and goats the farmers are bringing to the higher and greener slopes.
