Lasta highland (A pilgrim’s journey to Lalibela) – Das Lasta-Bergland (Pilgerfahrt nach Lalibela)

Lasta is an ancient district in the northern parts of Ethiopia’s central highland. The highland surrounds Lalibela and reaches more than 4.000 m in altitude. In lower altitudes, the people grow Teff, maize and vegetables, but the barren plateaus are dominated by barley and livestock. They breed everything up there, from goats to cattle, from mules to horses, but no pigs, because it is prohibited for Ethiopian Orthodox people to eat pigs, just like in other cultures. In most cases, only few houses in the settlements of Lasta highland are connected to the dilapidated power grid, maybe the local police station, the church or simply the house of an influential citizen. In the past, electricity had often been restricted to one or two certain hours a day, often around sunset and into the evening hours. Then, the people come together to recharge their mobile phones, to watch TV and of course, to discuss the weather and the harvest.

Lasta ist ein historischer Distrikt im nördlichen Teil des zentralen Hochlands von Äthiopien. Das Hochland umgibt Lalibela und erreicht Höhen von über 4.000 Meter. In den tieferen Lagen werden noch Teff, Mais und Gemüse angebaut, auf den kargen Hochplateaus hingegen dominieren Gerste und Viehzucht. Von Ziegen über Rinder bis hin zu Mauleseln und Pferden wird im Hochland beinahe alles gezüchtet. Nur Schweine nicht, denn die sind – wie in vielen Kulturen – tabu. Meist sind es nur einzelne Häuser oder Gebäude – eine Polizeistation, eine Kirche oder einfach das Haus eines einflussreichen Bürgers – in den Dörfern in den Bergen von Lasta, die an das marode Stromnetz angeschlossen sind. Und meist gibt es auch nur zu bestimmten Zeiten Strom. Vor Sonnenuntergang versammeln sich deshalb oft die Dorfbewohner, um Mobiltelefone zu laden, zum Fernsehen und natürlich zum Gespräch über Ernte und Wetter.

As well as there are more ways of killing a dog than by hanging, there are several routes leading to Lalibela, from north, south, east and west. The most common way on the ground leads from Weldiya at the north-south link between Adigrat, Mekele, Weldiya, Dessie and Addis Ababa westwards to Gashena and from there to Lalibela in the north. From Dessie south of Weldiya, there is a direct connection to Gashena on a dirt road taking you through some most spectacular parts of the Lasta mountains, but that road is only passable during the dry season.

Ob von Norden, Süden, Osten oder Westen kommend, es gibt einige Wege nach Lalibela. Der gängigste führt von Weldiya an der Nord-Süd-Verbindung zwischen Addis Ababa, Dessie, Weldiya, Mekele und Adigrat gen Westen nach Gashena und schließlich von dort nach Lalibela im Norden. Von Dessie, südlich von Weldiya gelegen, kommend gibt es allerdings auch eine direkte Verbindung nach Gashena, eine Piste, die nur in der Trockenzeit befahren werden kann und durch spektakuläre Teile der Berglandschaft von Lasta führt.
