Tigray & Mekele

The bizarre mountain landscape of Tigray is characterised and has been formed and shaped by the sheer tectonic forces of the Rift Valley, that starts in the neighbouring Danakil depression in the east. Coming from this starting point, the Horn of Africa, and East Africa in general are breaking off the continent. West to the Rift Valley, Ethiopia’s northern province Tigray with the impressive Gheralta massif is located. Hidden in the rocks are more than 100 ancient rock churches, of which many are still in use, emphasizing the long Christian tradition of the region.

Die bizarre Berglandschaft von Tigray ist geprägt und wurde geformt von den tektonischen Kräften des Rift Valleys, des Großen Afrikanischen Grabenbruchs, der in der im Osten benachbarten Danakil-Senke beginnt. Von dort beginnen das Horn von Afrika und ganz Ostafrika allmählich vom Kontinent abzubrechen. Auf der Westseite liegt Äthiopiens Nordprovinz Tigray mit dem Gheralta-Massiv. In den Bergen versteckt liegen über 100 zum Teil uralte Felsenkirchen, die auf die lange christliche Tradition der Region verweisen und bis heute genutzt werden.

Tigray’s modern capital is Mekele in the southeast of the province at an altitude of 2.200 m. Mekele is the starting point for most visits of the Danakil depression in the Afar region that starts east of the town. Today, Mekele is a well-developed city with around 600.000 inhabitants. Due to several educational institutions such as the Mekele University College of Business & Economics, the town is a young and fast developing one.

Die moderne Hauptstadt Tigrays ist Mekele, das im Südosten der Provinz am Rande der Berge auf 2.200 Metern Höhe liegt. Östlich schließt sich direkt die Danakil-Senke im Afar-Dreieck an, das von Mekele aus besucht werden kann. Heute ist Mekele eine gut entwickelte Stadt mit etwa 600.000 Einwohnern. Dank verschiedener Bildungseinrichtungen wie dem Mekele University College of Business & Economics handelt es sich um eine junge, sich rasch entwickelnde Stadt.
