Port Louis

Port Louis at the northwest coast is the capital of Mauritius and with 150.000 inhabitants also the biggest city on the island. With its setting at a bay with some mountains in the background and a mix of colonial and modern architecture, Port Louis is neither pretty nor nasty – on ground. Seen from the water, it´s a pretty ugly place. Seen from the citadel Fort Adélaïde on a hill in the middle of town, it´s an interesting city with a fancy ocean stretching seemingly forever into a deep blue distance, and the green Moka mountains in the background. Like the capital, the whole country bears the odour of indecisiveness, hanging between the Francophile and the Anglophile world, both languages in use at the same time, English especially with names and the wrong side of the road, French is used more in everyday life, but Creole is what dominates conversations.

Port Louis an der Nordwestküste ist die Hauptstadt von Mauritius und mit etwa 150.000 Einwohnern auch die größte des Landes. An einer Bucht gelegen und mit einigen Bergen im Hintergrund ist Port Louis mit seiner Mischung aus kolonialer und moderner Architektur weder hübsch noch hässlich – vom Boden aus gesehen. Vom Wasser aus ist die Stadt hübsch hässlich, von der Zitadelle Fort Adélaïde auf einem Hügel im Zentrum aus betrachtet ist sie zumindest interessant, mit einem verführerischen Ozean, der sich scheinbar bis in die tiefblaue Unendlichkeit erstreckt, und den grünen Moka-Bergen im Hintergrund. Wie an der Hauptstadt haftet am gesamten Land der Geruch von Unentschiedenheit, und so hängen sie zwischen franko- und anglophiler Welt, nutzen beide Sprachen zur selben Zeit, Englisch vor allem bei Namen und der falschen Seite der Straße, Französisch wird mehr im Alltag verwendet, aber Kreol dominiert die Gespräche der Einheimischen.

At the foot of the hill lies bustling Chinatown next to the nice and colourful market in an old two-storey building. In this area, you find most of the old buildings which haven´t been replaced by modern architecture yet. Only that the whole quarter seems to be shadowed by nearby tall modern buildings like the one of the Bank of Mauritius. Anyway, the main centre of attraction for Mauritians as well as tourists seems to be the Caudan Waterfront around Five-Star Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel at the port, a mall-like area with cinemas, eateries, a casino and luxury shopping. But at least the Odysseo Oceanarium just behind Caudan Waterfront is really worth a visit.

Am Fuß des Hügel liegt das quirlige Chinatown in direkter Nachbarschaft zum bunten Markt in einem alten, zweistöckigen Gebäude. In diesem Bereich gibt es noch die meisten alten Gebäude, die bis jetzt noch nicht abgerissen und durch moderne Architektur ersetzt worden sind. Nur dass das gesamte Viertel ein wenig im Schatten der benachbarten riesigen modernen Gebäude wie dem der Bank of Mauritius liegt, und das ist wörtlich zu nehmen. Ist aber egal, denn das Interesse sowohl der Mauritier als auch der Touristen scheint sowieso vor allem der Caudan Waterfront um das Fünf-Sterne-Labourdonnai-Waterfront-Hotel am Hafen zu gelten, eine Mall-artige Einkaufszeile mit Kinos, Gastronomie, einem Kasino und Luxus-Läden. Aber zumindest das Odysseo Oceanarium direkt hinter der Caudan Waterfront ist wirklich deinen Besuch wert.
