Thousands of years ago, Shiva travelled the world to show his wife Parvati the most beautiful places creator Brahma had come up with. On their way home, they crossed the Indian Ocean and suddenly saw a sparkling green island, Mauritius. When landing, river Ganges lost a few drops, because Shiva had taken it with him to protect the world of flooding while being away. Now, Ganges urged Shiva to recollect the lost water which had formed a lake, Grand Bassin. But Shiva refused to and said that in thousands of years people from India will be living on this island, and now they have water from the holy river to come to and say their prayers, to sacrifice and worship Shiva. That´s why Grand Bassin is the most holy place for the Hindu community. Every year in February or March, they make a pilgrimage to the temples in the shadows of the giant statues of Durga and Shiva, and then they celebrate Maha Shivaratree, the most important festival in the religious calendar.
Vor Jahrtausenden reiste Shiva um die Welt, um seiner Frau Parvati die schönsten Orte zu zeigen, die der Schöpfer Brahma erschaffen hatte. Auf dem Weg zurück nach Indien überflogen sie den Indischen Ozean und entdeckten irgendwann eine strahlend grüne Insel, Mauritius. Bei der Landung wurde Wasser des Ganges verschüttet, den Shiva mitgenommen hatte, um die Welt vor Überflutungen zu schützen, während er weg war. Der Ganges bat Shiva, das Wasser, das den See Grand Bassin gebildet hatte, zurückzuschöpfen, aber Shiva lehnte ab. Er sagte, dass in Tausenden Jahren Hindus auf der Insel leben werden, und die könnten dann zu ihrem Ganges-Wasser pilgern, ihre Gebete sprechen und Opfer darbringen. Deshalb ist Grand Bassin mit seinen Tempeln im Schatten zweier gigantischer Statuen der heiligste Ort für die Hindus der Insel. Jedes Jahr im Februar oder März pilgern sie dorthin, um Maha Shivaratree, das wichtigste Fest in ihrem Kalender, zu feiern.
