South of Mahébourg, shallow Blue Bay is the ideal place for snorkelling because of crystal clear water with a maximum depth of five metres, colourful corals and an abundance of fish. In 1997, it´s been declared a National Park, and in 2008 Blue Bay Marine Park was declared a Ramsar wetland of international importance. It is one of the few places around Mauritius where you find corals that are still intact. Most of the island is surrounded by coral reefs, but according to guides and conservationists from the Mauritius Wildlife Foundation, 80 percent of them have already died of coral bleaching – a consequence of man-made climate change and the global warming over the last decades. And it certainly doesn´t help that snorkelling is even allowed. To be honest: the water is too shallow, you always trample on some corals every now and then, especially when you´re tall. Apart from that, Blue Bay is also the place where my cheap Chinese underwater point-and-shoot got a bit leaky and its lens misty. It is nevertheless a fascinating place.
