Founded in 1589 by the Dutch, Mahébourg on Mauritius southeast coast has been the capital of the island for many years, named after the French Admiral Mahé de La Bourdonnais. But after the French had lost Mauritius to the British and a malaria outbreak had killed many inhabitants at the beginning of the 19th century, Port Louis was made the new capital. Today, around 17.000 people are living in Mahébourg which remains a sleepy little town characterized by its colonial history. The region´s largest employer is the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport just outside of town, and there is a lot of agriculture in the fertile region, its products spread out at the towns colourful market right at the port. Tourists in general only come on daytrips to go snorkelling at Blue Bay Marine National Park on the outskirts of Mahébourg or for a visit of Île aux Aigrettes, a protected island east of town. As a result, Mahébourg is the most authentic as well as laid back of Mauritius´ cities.
