Vola Maitso, Bemarivo river & Soavoanio Coconut plantation – Vola Maitso, der Bemarivo-Fluss und die Soavoanio Kokosnuss-Plantage

Vola Maitso is a cooperative of farmers growing and selling cocoa, vanilla, pepper, cloves, coconuts, and fruits in a picturesque landscape a few kilometres north of Sambava. They practice a sustainable form of agriculture, combining the cultivation of different plants in an ecological way – without chopping off trees till there is nothing left. Unfortunately, the SAVA region in Madagascar´s northeast is also a victim of global climate change. This year had too much rain and too few sunny days, so the cocoa beans had to dry mainly in interior storage rooms which made them brighter than normal.

Vola Maitso ist eine Kooperative von Farmern, die gemeinsam Kakao, Vanille, Pfeffer, Nelken, Kokosnüsse und verschiedene Früchte in der pittoresken Landschaft nur wenige Kilometer nördlich von Sambava anbauen und vermarkten. Sie praktizieren eine nachhaltige Form der Landwirtschaft, indem sie die Kultivierung der verschiedenen Pflanzen in möglichst ökologischer Art und Weise kombinieren – ohne die letzten Bäume zu fällen, bis nichts mehr übrig ist. Unglücklicherweise ist auch die SAVA-Region in Madagaskars Nordosten Opfer des globalen Klimawandels. In diesem Jahr gab es viel zu viel Regen und viel zu wenige Sonnenstunden, so dass die Kakaobohnen in Lagerräumen getrocknet werden mussten, weshalb sie deutlich heller sind als üblich.

When returning from Vola Maitso to Sambava, one can take a pirogue on nearby Bemarivo river coming from Marojejy mountains in the west. On your way, you will pass the huge bridge with the road north to Vohemar as well as a sacred waterfall. In the end, the last kilometres through the vast Soavoanio coconut plantation will be covered best on a motorcycle serving as a taxi where cars would be in trouble driving.

Wenn man von Vola Maitso nach Sambava zurückkehrt, kann man das in einem Boot auf dem nahen Bemarivo-Fluss machen, der aus den Marojejy-Bergen weiter westlich kommt. Auf dem Weg passiert man die riesige Brücke mit der Straße gen Norden nach Vohemar sowie einen heiligen Wasserfall. Die letzten Kilometer durch die endlos scheinende Soavoanio Kokosnuss-Plantage nimmt man am besten ein Motorrad, die überall dort, wo ein Auto Schwierigkeiten hätte, die Aufgabe von Taxis übernehmen.
